Aim and Objectives

The program is designed to educate and train the students in Ship Building technology with a view to perform shop floor work at ship building or ship repair industries. The program is designed as a combination of Lectures, Practical and workshop and on job training at a shipyard.

Eligibility:

10+2 / 12th equivalent with minimum total 60% average marks in PCM and minimum of 50% marks in English 10th or 12th examination. Common Entrance Test by IMU.

About the Course

Ship Building is a combination of art, science and Engineering. But there are a number of other important factors too to be considered in ship building. Therefore, the curriculum includes types of ships, materials, welding and cutting, ship structure, outfitting, design ,dimensions, displacement, stability, propulsive characteristics, Hull form, general arrangement, structural details, prefabrication, shell plating, framing, decks, Hatches, superstructure, tanker construction, pumping, piping, painting, corrosion control, ventilation, refrigeration, testing, launching, international regulations and shipyard layout etc. Training is provided in well-equipped workshop manned by able and experienced trainers. Training are also imparted at select shipyards, repair firms etc.

Practical Training

Curriculum intends to develop lot of practical skills in trainees. This will be done at college work shop and on the Job Training in vessels under construction at various shipyards in India.

Prospects

The advantage is that the students are more professionalized with practical training while being attached to the designated shipyards. The BSc students get more opportunity to understand yard practices, thereby gains more confidence to work in design or ship production department independently. This course is therefore more preferred by the industry. This course is conducted only in College of Ship Technology, which has specialized equipments for this special Training course.

Career growth Prospectus

Successful candidates can start their career at Managerial level in shipyards and various companies, subsequently elating to highest levels in any organization. They can also go for higher studies and specialization programs like MBA, M Tech., MSc and Post Graduate Diplomas in specialized streams. They also have opportunity in Merchant Navy.

Employment Potential

The course curriculum covers industry requirements for employment in Shipyards and Marine related industries such as Oil & Gas, Offshore, Ports & Harbours, Classification societies, equipment manufacturers & service, Merchant Navy etc in India and abroad. Middle East, Europe and Far East countries do not employ Technicians without a government approved University Degree. In light of above, this program provide huge employment to the young generation. Their work criteria changes according to the type and domain of the company they are working with. As the industrial sector has drastically risen in pace and technology the need for more technically trained professionals has increased exponentially.
